Why Did My Venue Drop on Google Maps?

Most Google Maps ranking drops for hospitality venues come down to one of six causes: stalled review activity, a competitor doing more than you, profile inactivity, unnoticed profile changes or suggested edits, a Google algorithm update, or a quality issue like a suspension. Diagnose in that order before changing anything.

First, confirm it is a real drop

Rankings on Google Maps vary by the searcher’s exact location, the time of day and the phrasing of the search. Standing in your own venue searching for yourself is not a measurement. Check from multiple locations and searches, or use rank tracking, before treating a wobble as a crisis.

The six causes, in the order to check them

    1. Your review momentum stalled. Google weighs recency and steady flow, not just your star average. A venue that stopped gathering reviews three months ago slowly slides behind one collecting them weekly.
    2. A competitor stepped up. Ranking is relative. If a nearby venue started collecting reviews, posting weekly and refreshing photos, your position can fall while your own profile is unchanged.
    3. Your profile went quiet. No new posts, no new photos, unanswered reviews and unanswered questions all read as inactivity to Google.
    4. Something on your profile changed without you noticing. Google accepts suggested edits from the public and its own systems: categories, hours and attributes can change silently, and a wrong primary category is a classic silent killer.
    5. An algorithm update moved the goalposts. Local ranking updates roll out several times a year. If your drop coincides with industry-wide chatter, the answer is to strengthen fundamentals, not panic.
    6. A quality issue or suspension. The rarest and the worst. If your profile stops appearing entirely, act immediately. Our Google support service deals with suspensions and broken profiles.

    What recovery looks like

Recovery is the same work that builds a strong profile in the first place: steady review flow with every review answered, weekly activity, accurate categories and attributes, and photos that reflect the venue today. Done consistently, positions typically rebuild over weeks, not days. That consistency is precisely what our review management and posts and updates services deliver, and our backend optimisation catches the silent profile changes.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to recover a Google Maps ranking?

For cause-and-effect issues like a wrong category, improvement can show within days of the fix. For momentum problems like stalled reviews and inactivity, expect visible recovery over four to twelve weeks of consistent work.

    Did Google penalise my restaurant?

Formal penalties are rare for ordinary venues. What feels like a penalty is usually a competitor overtaking you or a silent profile change. A genuine suspension is unmistakable because your profile stops appearing at all.

Do photos really affect Maps ranking?

Photos influence engagement, and engagement feeds ranking. Profiles with fresh, appealing photos earn more clicks, direction requests and time-on-profile, all of which help. Stale or unappetising photos quietly cost you both clicks and position.
